For optimum absorption into the bloodstream, Solaray Vitamin B-12's special formulated lozenge is designed to dissolve slowly in your mouth (preferably under your tongue). Vitamin B12 is is a water-soluble vitamin needed for normal nerve cell activity, DNA replication, and production of the mood-affecting substance SAMe (S-adenosyl-L-methionine). Vitamin B12 acts with folic acid and vitamin B6 to control homocysteine levels. An excess of homocysteine is associated with an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, and potentially other diseases such as osteoporosis and Alzheimer’s disease.*

Where is it found? - Vitamin B12 is found in all foods of animal origin, including dairy, eggs, meat, poultry, and fish. According to one report, small, inconsistent amounts occur in seaweed (including nori and chlorella) and tempeh. Many researchers and healthcare professionals believe that people cannot rely on vegetarian sources to provide predictably sufficient quantities of vitamin B12. However, another study found substantial amounts of vitamin B12 in nori (at least 55 mcg per 100 grams of dry weight).

Applications: Mental disorders, fatigue, debilitated states, smokers, post-surgery, pernicious anemia, cancer prevention, insomnia, depression, shingles, neuritis, hepatitis, stress, multiple sclerosis, bursitis.

Scientific Data: Several studies support the notion that a vitamin B12 deficiency in the elderly and others may account for psychiatric disturbances.

Depleting Agents: Anticoagulant drugs, antigout medication, laxatives, alcohol, aspirin, antibiotics, diuretics, ant-acids, caffeine, estrogen, sleeping pills, contraceptives, cooking temperatures.

Sources: Liver, organ meats, eggs, dairy products, fish, meat.

Interactions: A lack of vitamin B12 can result in folic acid and melatonin depletion.

Recommendations: You will see this vitamin most commonly sold as cyanocobalamin. Methyl cobalamine and adenosylcobalamin are also sources of B12. Some experts consider methyl cobalamine to be more bioactive. Look for sublingual tablets for adequate absorbability. Injections of vitamin B12 are also available.*
